London’s Bicycle Superhighway
Tags: To encourage more people to cycle to work, cut down on fuel emissions, and make cycling a more enjoyable experience, London has added the Bicycle Superhighway. It is basically a 1.5 meter wide blue line that provides the most efficient and safest routes from London’s surrounding communities into the heart of the city. The lines continue through intersections, so cars know where bikers may be and bikers know to avoid veering outside of the blue lines. This will definitely create better situations and hopefully alleviate some of the anxiety surrounding bicyclists on busy streets. This example of a city taking the first step to encourage healthier practices like bicycling show how important of a role the city’s infrastructure plays in leading a community to healthier and more eco-friendly practices. Other cities have further facilitated cycling by installing indoor bike racks at public facilities with built in lock and keys. This saves cyclists the worry of not finding a suitable bike rack. An even safer addition to the Bicycle Superhighway may include a smoothly paved path for additional enjoyment for bikers. The path could be built alongside the road and have a barrier separating the bikers from the drivers –making everyone more comfortable. What do you think? All Votes
